TV’s – How to Get the Best for a Great Price
A good purchase decision requires careful research, especially when you’re buying a big-ticket item like a TV. Some of the newer features and options are confusing, and it can be hard to know which features you need, and which ones are not worth the pretty penny they cost.
That’s why we’ve dedicated ourselves to putting in the research for you and compiling it into one simple guide. Without further ado, here are our tips for buying the best TV for the best price.
Screen Size
Just like with mobile phones (we also have a phones Afterpay page btw), screen size matters! Did you know that TV screens are measured diagonally, not horizontally?
Depending on the placement and purpose of the TV you’re looking to buy, you’ll want to consider what size is right for that. For example, a TV for your kitchen or for a small children’s bedroom might be right at about 24 inches, whereas a TV for the main entertaining room of a house is better off being somewhere closer to 65 inches.
There are no strict rules to determine the perfect screen size. It mainly comes down to preference, but you may also consider the field of view. Especially for a 1080p TV, keep in mind that the formula to determine field of view is 1.6 multiplied by the diagonal measurement of the TV. So, if you have a 60-inch screen, make sure you have the room to sit at least 96 inches (8 feet) away from the screen. You can use this formula in reverse to also determine what the sweet spot for size would be for your room.
HD vs. UHD
These two acronyms refer to your TV’s resolution. An HD (High-Definition) TV is often referred to as 1080p because the screen resolution measures 1920 x 1080 pixels. Pixels are the tiny bits that make up your TV’s picture.
UHD (Ultra High Definition), also known as 4K, on the other hand, has a resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels. This is 4 TIMES the density of pixels as compared to HD. This means there’s much greater picture detail when you’re watching TV.
While there’s still a lot of content only available in 1080p quality, having a 4K TV allows you to enjoy high-quality content when you find it. Now, it’s easier to find 4K programs on services like Amazon and Netflix.
HDR – Why It’s Important
HDR stands for High Dynamic Range. This means that it boosts your TV’s brightness, colour, and contrast, which makes the images on your screen look incredibly real. While the results of this change in quality are truly spectacular, you only get to enjoy them when watching a TV show or movie that has been mastered in HDR. While there’s quite a bit of HDR material out there now, it hasn’t quite reached the masses.
We expect a large boost of HDR content available as the year goes on, so it’s something to consider when making a long-term purchase like a TV.
Viewing Angle
One of the drawbacks of LCD screens is their limited viewing angle. This means that the screen looks good only at a sweet spot in the middle of the screen. Those watching the program from other points of view in the room may not be able to see the full image, or it may be extremely distorted.
It’s crucial to check the viewing angle in multiple different ways at the store to ensure you won’t be disappointed when you sit down in your favourite reclining chair at home to watch and discover that you can’t see much at that angle.
Other Considerations: Inputs and Outputs, Smart TVs
Two other important considerations to make are about the inputs/outputs of the TV, and whether or not you desire a Smart TV.
You want to make sure the hardware of your TV supports all of your AV gear that you want to plug in. Most people will only ever need the HDMI and USB ports, but if you have something special you’re looking to connect to it, do a double-check. For example, old gaming consoles might require an adapter to play on new TVs.
In addition, consider what you plan to watch on your TV. If it’s mainly streaming services or YouTube videos, consider a Smart TV. Many TVs have internet capabilities now, so it’s not much of a price bump. You’ll be able to watch all your favourite Netflix and Hulu programs from the same remote that turns your TV on. If you prefer to stick to your separate streaming devices like Roku or Fire Stick, however, just make sure there are enough inputs for it.
Get Your Dream TV Now and Pay Later
Once you’ve found the perfect TV for you, it might be tough facing the price tag. If you need a bit of extra time to wait for your next paycheck, save up a bit, or just hold off your bill for a bit, luckily there are a few services that will allow you to purchase the TV on credit and pay for it later. Some of the best examples of this are AfterPay, OxiPay, and ZipPay.
Each of these three services has slightly different structures, but none require additional interest payments, meaning that you are only paying the price of the TV, but at a time that suits you!
If you’re ready to improve your viewing experience but are tight on budget, have no fear. Paying afterwards is now an option with so many great pay-later alternatives on the market.
