What Is Google Home

Google Home is a smart assistant that makes life a little bit easier. You can speak to Google Home with voice commands, and Google will answer. The speaker allows you to listen to music, check the weather, get the latest local news, or integrate other home automation devices.

With a Google Home, you can control your thermostat, lights, appliances, or anything else that you’ve connected. You can program your Google Home to wake you up in the morning with news, weather, or the radio. As long as you schedule your Google Home with your home address and work address, it can keep you updated on your morning traffic.

A Brief History of Google Home

Google Home wasn’t the first wireless speaker to come to market. Google developed the Google Home speaker to compete with the Amazon Echo, and in March 2016, Google announced it would release its first smart speaker that would run on your Google Assistant. It was designed to integrate with other products so you could control everything from a single device.

Shortly after the announcement, in October of 2016, the Google Home was released in the United States. Google finally released it in 2017 in Japan, Germany, France, Canada, Australia, and Italy.

In late 2017, Google announced and released both the Google Home Mini and the Google Home Max. As you can imagine, the Google Home Mini was smaller and less expensive, while the Google Home Max was more extensive and expensive.

In early 2019, Google announced that all of their smart home products would continue to be marketed as Nest brand products.

Practical Uses for Google Home

There are hundreds of ways to use Google Home. It can answer questions, help around the house, and play music. But there are some other powerful things it can do that you may not have even thought of yet.

Lock the doors and turn the lights off. If you’ve already gone to bed, but you have a sneaking suspicion that you may have forgotten to lock the front door or switch off the kitchen light, tell your Google Home to do it for you. Your trusty companion will make sure everything is safe and tucked in tight for bedtime.

Order a pizza. Google Home can ring up the Domino’s down the street and place your Easy Order, or get Domino’s on the phone so you can tell them what you want yourself. If you’re not using your Google Home to fill your home with pizza, we’re not sure what you’re doing with your life.

Go shopping. If you’re out of shampoo or you need more bread, set up your preferred method of payment and then have Google Home do all the shopping for you at places like Walmart, Petsmart, Target, Ulta, and more.

Improve your smile. If you’re guilty of rushing through brushing your teeth, you can have Google Home time you. It’s the perfect way to get your teeth cleaner and happier. You can set the timer for all kinds of things, or you can set up custom commands for timers like, “OK Google, brush my teeth,” and it’ll know just what to do.

Watch some television. Don’t bother with the remote. Just tell Google Home to turn on the TV and search for your favorite shows. You can start where you left off or play movies on HBO and videos on YouTube. Playback commands like “start from the beginning,” “stop,” and “pause.”

Change Google Home’s voice. If you get tired of the default voice, play with eight distinct voices to find your favorite. You may even find a celebrity voice on there if you look hard enough. Hint: it’s John Legend.

Different Models

Google Home has four different models: the original Google Home, the Google Home Mini, the Google Home Max, and the Google Home Hub. The unique Google Home is an upright device that has two microphones, voice activation, and far-field voice recognition. It’s the first Google Home device.

The Google Home Mini is smaller than the original and can fit virtually anywhere. It has voice recognition, but only one microphone, so it won’t be able to hear you from very far away. The Google Home Max is larger and more robust. With six microphones, it has enhanced hearing and boasts loud volumes.

The Google Home Hub has an integrated display to help you understand more about what’s going on behind the scenes. Commands, statuses, and search results will display on the screen for enhanced interaction with the device.

All Google Home devices can be connected for synchronized playback throughout your home or a surround sound effect in a single room.
